Stickers, along with small and big emotional moments, were part of all of our childhoods. They brought us into a world in which fantasy is free to rein, from the opening of the packet, with either a frenetic or slow and dramatic revealing to show how lucky you have been, to the chaotic world of trading doubles with friends and correctly completing the album which gradually grows over time.
Only one name has guaranteed all that over the last 60 years, becoming synonymous with those magical little cards: Panini. This retrospective focuses on the relationship between Panini stickers and the world of sport, going from the first Calciatori album to the huge global success experienced by the World Cup editions. The image gallery allows visitors to discover previously unpublished anecdotes and find out about how it works behind the scenes at Panini. This journey has covered over half a century of sporting history both in Italy and the rest of the world, with the first section dedicated to the history of stickers and the birth of Panini through the launch of the first Calciatori collection in 1961/62.
The second section tells the story of the Calciatori collection and the iconic overhead kick, with in-depth insight into sticker legends, from Pierluigi Pizzaballa, one of the rarer ones, to a gallery containing all the covers. The third section sees Panini stickers cross international borders thanks to Panini collections from World Cups, European Championships and domestic leagues all over the world. The final part of the journey involves albums from other sports dating back to the end of the 1960s with the Champions of Sport collection, which brings together collectors in all sports, from cycling to American football. Each part also provides insight into the relationship between Panini and La Gazzetta dello Sport, with the collaboration born soon after the Modena-based company started out and contributing to the development of several initiatives that bring together two of the most prestigious names in the world of sports publishing in Italy.
