Elisa Di Francisca
Elisa Di Francisca was born in Jesi on 13 December 1982. She won two fencing Olympic gold medals at London 2012, took part in – and won – Dancing with the Stars with Raimondo Todaro, and became mother to Ettore in July 2017. Elisa started out at Jesi Fencing Club and spent years in the shadow of other Italian fencing stars before exploding onto the scene in 2009, when she won her first bronze medal at the World Championships in Antalya. In 2010 she won a gold medal at the World Championships in Paris while the following year she won the European Championships as well as her first World Cup gold medal. At the 2012 Games in London, she won an Olympic gold medal on an unforgettable day for Italian fencing, with Arianna Errigo taking silver and Valentina Vezzali bronze. A few days later she helped Italy win gold in the team event. After many years training with Stefano Cerioni, when he left Italy to become Russia head coach Di Francisca began working with Giovanna Trillini, who stayed with her until her silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Elisa’s World Championship haul includes a gold, a silver and three bronzes at individual level (the last one in 2019) and six golds, three silvers and a bronze in team events. In 2019 she won her fifth European Championship gold.
