Enrico Sgarella is a now-retired lawyer specialising in family law and human rights appeals to the European Court. He is passionate about ecology and a sea-lover turned mountain-lover. Sgarella is the founder and president of the Telluric, Ecological Trekking and Solidarity Movement, which encourages hiking that is aware of environmental and social problems. He was the organiser of the ‘Long March on l’Aquila’, a solidarity walk which began in 2012 to aid reconstruction efforts in the city following the earthquake of 6 April 2009. Now known as the ‘Walk Through Changed Lands’, it’s a hiking route that passes through the areas struck by earthquakes in 2016 and 2017 with the aim of bringing aid – not just financial – to the people who still live in these areas.
