Federica Pellegrini was born in Mirano, in the province of Venice, on 5 August 1988. She is part of the Aniene club and is coached by Matteo Giunta. In 2004, she became the youngest Italian to achieve an Olympic podium finish at the age of 16. She was also the first woman to obtain a podium finish in the race (the 200m freestyle) on eight consecutive occasions and to break the four-minute mark in the 400m freestyle (3:59.15, which is a current European record). She has competed at the Olympics four times (she was the standard-bearer at Rio 2016, coming fourth in the 200m freestyle). Pellegrini has won at least one gold medal at all major events: one at the Olympic Games, seven at the World Championships (six in a long-course pool, one in a short-course pool in the 200 and 400m freestyle), 14 in the European Championships (equally split between long and short-course pools). Federica also has 11 world records to her name, including the 200m freestyle – 1:52.98. She recently won her fourth gold medal in the 200m freestyle in Gwangju, where she achieved an eighth consecutive podium finish as part of a run which includes every World Aquatics Championship since 2005.
