The Brazilian comes from Sao Paulo but has Italian origins (his paternal grandfather emigrated to Brazil from Cerignola). He raced in Formula 1 for 15 seasons, making his debut with Sauber in 2002, having won Formula Renault and Formula 3000. In 2006 he moved to Ferrari, with which he raced for 8 seasons, winning 11 Grands Prix. Felipe Massa has said of himself: “I am the driver to come closest to winning the world title without doing so.”. In 2008 he crossed the finish line of the final GP of the season, in his home country Brazil, as the champion. However, on the last lap Lewis Hamilton performed an overtake, taking him from 5th to 6th place to earn himself the World Championship by a single point. He retired at the end of 2017, after four seasons at Williams. From the 2018/19 season he has competed in Formula E with Venturi. Last year he achieved a podium finish in Monte Carlo, his home and that of his team, and finished the season in 15th place with 26 points.
