Giuseppe Sala, born in Milan in 1958, graduated in economics and business from Bocconi University in 1983. Sala, who is known as Beppe, has a wealth of professional management experience behind him, thanks to holding positions of responsibility in both the private and public sectors. The Italian was the driving force behind Expo 2015 in Milan, having previously held managerial positions at internationally renowned companies, such as Pirelli and Telecom Italia. In January 2009, Sala started to work in the public sector when he was named the managing director of the Municipality of Milan, a role which he performed until being appointed the managing director of Expo 2015 in June 2010. In May 2013, he was named the government commissioner for Expo 2015 in Milan. His love for the city and desire to do something to make it and the surrounding area even better, more welcoming and attractive on the international stage was what urged him to take the step into politics.
