Gregorio Paltrinieri, born on 5 September 1994 in Carpi, is a swimmer who is trained by Stefano Morini in Ostia at the federal centre, along with the other Italian middle-distance swimmers. The policeman is an Olympic champion in the 1,500 metre freestyle, two-time 1,500 metre world champion and 800 metre world champion with a European record of 7:39.27, in what is a new Olympic competition, also winning a silver medal in 2015 and bronze in the 800 metres. He has won silver twice in the world championship in a short-course pool in the 1,500 metres and is the current world-record holder in a short-course pool with a time of 14:08.06. He holds the second all-time record in a long-course pool with a time of 14:34.04. During the last World Championships in Gwangju, besides winning gold in the 800 metres and bronze in the 1,500 metres, which was his fourth World Championship podium finish in a row, he won silver in the mixed relay race to qualify for the 10 km at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, thanks to finishing in the top 10.
