Luca Marini was born in Urbino on 10 August 1997. He is the younger brother of Valentino Rossi, through his mother Stefania Palma. Standing at 184cm and weighing 69kg, he started racing on minibikes, before transitioning to the CIV (Campionato Italiano Velocità). In the 2013 season, he achieved 6 podium finishes and ranked fourth overall. It was in that year that Marini competed in his first GP, at Misano at Moto3 level, riding the FTR Honda for Twelve Racing. In 2014, at the European Moto3 championships in Spain, he rode the Kalex-KTM for Team Aspar. In 2015 Marini moved up to the Moto2 category of the European championship, with team Pons, changing his number from 10 to 97 (his date of birth but also his brother’s 46 turned upside down). In 2016 he competed full time in the Moto2 world championship, with the Forward team. In 2018 he moved to team Sky VR46, with which he achieved his first podium finish (3rd in Germany) and first victory (in Malaysia). He’s bagged two podium finishes this year, still with team Sky VR46, including second spot at Mugello.
