Luca Zaia was born on 27 March 1968 in Conegliano, near Treviso and has been married to Raffaella since 1998. He comes from a farming family and his mother, Carmela, and father, Giuseppe, a mechanic, live in Bibano, Godega di Sant’Urbano (Treviso). He obtained a high-school diploma from the Cerletti School of Enology and a degree in Livestock Production Science from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Udine. He often says that his family taught him the value of hard work and he did all sorts of jobs to pay for his studies – because all jobs are dignified. He joined the Lega Nord at a very young age and in 1993 took part in his first election campaign as town councillor of Godega di Sant’Urbano. In 1995 he was elected to the provincial council of Treviso and in 1998 he was elected as President of the Province of Treviso – the youngest person in Italy to hold such a position. In 2005 he was appointed as Vice-president of Veneto but stepped down in May 2008 to become Minister for Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. In March 2010 he began his first mandate as President of Veneto and in May 2015 he was re-elected with over 50% of the votes, becoming the governor elected with the highest number of votes in Italy.
