The leading light of the Italian Paralympic movement, Oney Tapia is well known outside of sport as well after winning the celebrity dance talent show “Ballando con le Stelle”. Born in Cuba but a naturalised Italian, he is first and foremost an athlete and sportsman. Oney also lost his sight, albeit not through illness like Assunta Legnante. In 2011 he was hit by a trunk while working as a tree climber. He used to play baseball and practise boxing. Tapia began with torball before developing a passion for athletics. Five years later he was competing at the Paralympics in Rio, where he won a silver medal. He missed the 2017 world championships in London through injury but immediately won gold on his return to competition at the European championships in Berlin last year in the discus, his speciality, which he took up after losing his sight. He has also written a book, “Più forte del buio” (Stronger than the darkness). A winner on and off the field.
