Paolo Bertolucci was born in Forte dei Marmi on 3 August 1951 and caught the attention of the tennis world when he won the Italian Allievi (junior) title aged 15. During his 13-year professional career, from 1970 to 1983, he won six singles tournaments and 12 doubles tournaments. In 1977 he became the first Italian to win three tournaments in a single season. In 1976 he helped Italy win the Davis Cup in Chile. His career-high ranking of 12th makes him the fourth-highest ranked Italian of all time. In 1997 he took over from Adriano Panatta as Italy’s Coppa Davis captain and helped them reached the final in 1998, where they lost to Sweden.
