Pietro Piller Cottrer

Pietro Piller Cottrer was born in Pieve di Cadore in the province of Belluno on 20 December 1974 and lives in Sappada. He is married to former long distance runner Francesca Sommavilla, with whom he has two children: Fabio and Marta. He was a Carabiniere and retired in 2013 after winning the lot. He burst on to the scene on 15 March 1997 when he won the 50 km race at the Holmenkollen ski festival in Norway. He won a World Cup and was an Olympic relay winner at Torino 2006, where he also won bronze as an individual and his first Olympic medal was a silver in Salt Lake City. He was the world champion in the 15 km freestyle at Oberstdorf 2005 and has racked up a total of four Olympic medals (the last coming at Vancouver 2010 with a bronze in the 15 km freestyle), three world championships and seven World Cups. He is now in charge of the Italy cross-country skiing youth team.
