Stefania Belmondo was born in Pietraporzio (Cuneo) on 13 January 1969. A member of the forest corps, she is 5’2” and weighs 45kg. Belmondo has two sons, Lorenzo and Mathias, with whom she lives in Demonte. Stefania retired after the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. She was the first Italian cross-country skier to win gold at both the World championships and Olympic games. She won two Olympic titles: the first in the 30km in Albertville in 1992 and the second in the 15km in Salt Lake City in 2002. She also won a total of 10 Olympic medals. That incredible haul puts her second behind fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti (13) in the all-time Italian Olympic medal winners for both the summer and winter games. She also won four gold medals at the world championships, for a total of 13 medals in the competition. She won 23 World Cup races and claimed 64 podium finishes. Her 34 national titles is an Italian record.
