Yelena Isinbayeva was born in Volgograd, Russia, on 3 June 1982. She is the current pole vault world record holder with a height of 5.06m, which she recorded in Zurich on 28 August 2009. She remains the first and only woman to have cleared five metres. In a six-year period starting on 13 July 2003 (when she cleared 4.82), she broke her own world record 28 times (17 outdoor, 11 indoor). She won three world outdoor titles (2005, 2007 and 2013) and four indoor (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2012). She also boasts a European outdoor title (2006) and a European indoor gold (2005). She retired on 20 August 2016, a day on from her election to the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission. She has a daughter, Eva, born on 28 June 2014, with javelin thrower Nikita Petinov, who she married on 12 December 2014.
